Raeburn
Oil on canvas
90 x 90 cm
2012
Sir Henry Raeburn (1756 - 1823), after whom this painting was named, was a Scottish portrait painter and the country's first significant portraitist since the Union to remain based in Scotland. He was able to produce a telling and forcible likeness; his work is distinguished by powerful characterisation, stark realism, dramatic and unusual lighting effects, and swift and broad handling of the most resolute sort. Raeburn served as Portrait Painter to His Majesty in Scotland.
